We continue to plow ahead on home repairs. Each room is making progress, though I'm hitting a wall on our entry hallway. I thought I'd ask for your help.
I want this area to be welcoming as the door at the end of our hall is the large "guest room" (living room). For our national friends, we will quickly rush them into the formal room, seat them and then lay out the spread. For foreign friends however, the entryway has potential for the lingering hang time that we are so good at. :) Through the big windows I can sit with my girl friends and watch the kids swing and play in the sandbox. So here's the help I need . . .
1. What do I do for curtains. The morning sun is really intense and heats up the entire hallway. If I could block sun in the morning but enjoy the view the rest of the day, that would be ideal.
2. What do I do for linger time? I've found a small table that I could do with stools? If I did floor pillows I think my national friends would be confused?
Thanks for your help! I'm excited to do this together!

okay....you should use roman pull shades. they're super cheap.(here) they are durable and would be easy to clean, and they fit flat against a window so they wouldn't take up space. maybe a bamboo, or a darker reed weave? if you get me the measurements i could mail them to you? is that an option?
and for the seating. you should have austin build a long bench (in box form) to extend in of the windows. and then you could sew a long cusion. that would be nice.
I agree with Megan about the bamboo shades. They're dark and should hold out light. But you have a LOT of windows, so cost could add up quickly. You could look into that by google-ing roman shades or bamboo shades.
I'll think about the "lingering" ideas.
Hey Jenny,
my thought exactly was the bamboo shades... It would be easy to roll up and down and keep out lots of the heat. Sometimes there are even local alternatives that could be used OUTSIDE the house as opposed to inside - then you still might be able to have some "pretty" curtains on the inside to add color and fun if you wanted... Don't know how the weather is but that is something IAM used to do in our old city (use shades on the outside of the building) in the summer.
I think I'm also a fan of the pillow/bench...you could maybe even find one with internal storage for extra shoes?
the outside shade things really do help with heat...you might want to look for that even if you do roman shades with curtains...
have fun!
Jenni
I have white sheets (twin size) for curtains in my house. I got them super cheap, much cheaper than anything actually made for windows. They are slightly thicker fabric than sheer curtains so they keep it from being too hot, but being white they still let in a lot of light. I used curtain rings that clip on so I could fold the sheet to the right length for my windows and clip them wherever. But you could also use a seam ripper to rip out the ends of the large fold at the top of the sheet and run a rod through the fold.
I had the same thoughts as everyone else about building benches of some sort. I like the idea of having extra toy or shoe storage under pillows!
